Snowmageddon 2015

We have been hit by some pretty nasty weather lately.  This was the biggest snow storm Kentucky has seen since the early 90's.  We didn't even own a snow shovel because, well, we have never really needed one here.  Luckily I bought one on clearance a few days before the snow arrived.  We received over 12 inches of snow one day and then another 5 inches over the next couple days.  I was VERY excited about all of this snow. I love being cozy inside my house especially when Brad is home and snowed in with us.  With all of the craziness and stress over the move it was kind of nice being stuck at home together with no where to go.  Here are some of our snow day(s) activities....

We played a lot of dress up....

Don't mind Grayson - he is cutting 5 teeth at the same time and fighting off a nasty cold....

We watched the snow come down....

We made snow cream...

Recipe: milk, sugar, snow and sprinkles of course...
We used dry erase markers and practiced our letters on the door....
I tried to get some packing done...

Which is nearly impossible when you have a 3 year old and a 1 year old...

Our house was a huge mess....

Then we finally bundled up and took the boys outside...

They went sledding for the first time (in the middle of the road)...

Owen was one happy boy....
Grayson was not...
This is how Owen found his way back to the house....
Happy to be nice and warm...
12 days and counting until the big move - I don't feel mentally, physically or emotionally ready for this huge change in our lives.  But it is coming whether I am ready or not.  Ahhhh!

Owen Update...

Because I wrote a post about Grayson, I thought I might want to remember some of the milestones Owen has hit lately.

Owen loves to read books.  He has memorized every word to many of his favorite books and can recite the book to me while I point to each word.

The first few book Owen memorized was Goodnight Moon...
And a couple of Owen's other favorites to recite to me are the Elephant and Piggie books...
I'm generally not a fan of these books, however there are a a lot of sight words and the characters are very expressive and Owen finds them humorous.  Owen also knows all of his letter sounds and tries so hard to sound out words that he sees.  The first word Owen sounded out was "at".  What a perfect first word to read!  It is pretty easy to teach a child things when they are eager to learn.  I hope it stays this way!

Owen's favorite activities....

Owen loves all things with wheels.  He loves cars, planes, trains, tractors, etc.
Max and Luke handed down their old guitar (which looks brand new) and Owen loves to try to play music just like his big cousins...
Owen loves donuts (just like his mama) especially chocolate donuts from Magee's.  He said "look how strong I am mom - this donut is making me have big muscles"....

Owen loves to go to Whole Foods, we often go there for lunch after trips to Joseph Beth because they sell individual pizza slices which is the perfect cheap lunch for all of us to eat.  And he gets to push a little cart around the store and help mommy shop....

Owen often tells me that my dinners are almost as good as Whole Foods pizza (thanks Owen)....

Owen loves anything sweet and would eat cupcakes all day if I let him - he recently got to make his own cupcake at the new Kroger which was a very big deal for him...
Owen just started writing his name - here is the first time he ever wrote it by himself.  It has improved since this picture....

A couple of weeks ago Owen took his first shower alone.  He kept saying "Look Grayson it's like a sprinkler, I'm taking a shower Gray"....

Owen loves to play board games right now.  He especially enjoys Hi Ho Cherrio and Candyland.  He doesn't quite get that someone wins or loses so he cheers for everyone when they "win".  I know it won't always be so enjoyable to play games with him but for now, it is so sweet!
Friends - Owen's best friends are Claire aka "kiki", Parker, Will, Mary, and Molly.  We spend a lot of time with these neighborhood friends whether it is through school, bike rides, playdates or seeing them around town.  They all love each other so much!!  I think it will be difficult for all of the kids to understand that we won't be here anymore but little ones are resilient and unfortunately I am sure all their fun times will be forgotten too quickly.

It is a good thing Owen has a built in best friend who lives with him - his brother.....

Food:  Owen's favorite foods are cookies, cake ice cream, candy - junk food of any kind.  He also likes salami, ham, Whole Foods Pizza, chicken nuggets, pasta, fruit of any kind.  Unfortunately these words have come out of my mouth many times "Owen you have to eat your chicken nuggets before you can have any more fruit) - bad mom!

Likes:  Being with his mommy, daddy and Grayson.  Playing with his train table, playing with cars, trains, planes, trucks, tractors, reading books, running, climbing, playing sports, riding his bike, playing with his cousins and his neighborhood buddies.

Dislikes:  Going to bed at night, following directions, and eating dinner.  These are the three biggest triggers for a major meltdown with Owen and unfortunately all three of these things have to be done on a daily basis.

Potty:  Owen is now potty trained.  I took the "don't push it" approach and I would say with a stubborn first born child this was the appropriate way to do it for us.  I really waited until he initiated that he was ready, offered some motivation (hot wheels cars) and voila he was potty trained.  Until he got diarrhea (sorry TMI) but it is true.  After Christmas Owen came down with a virus that lasted two weeks and it was TERRIBLE!!  Uncontrollable diarrhea for two weeks, ugh!  Which meant he was back in diapers for those two weeks and we had to start all over again with the potty training.  Having your children wear diapers is much easier than underwear people!  Don't rush it!
Now he is back in underwear...
And Grayson wants to be in underwear too....

Sorry Gray - you are not ready yet.

Sleep:  Owen has not been taking a nap consistently for about a year now.  He goes through phases where he will nap every day and then he will go through phases where he won't nap for a week straight.  We are finally at the point where he can make it through the day without a nap and be just fine.  I actually prefer that he doesn't nap because it makes bedtime a little easier.  If he naps now I wake him up by 3:30 and then he is grouchy and he won't fall asleep until at least 10:00.  Whether he falls asleep or not at nap time he is still required to have quiet time for 2 hours.  I have a couple of boxes in his room filled with puzzles, and toys that he can play with quietly and somedays if he is really tired he will fall asleep but but often times he won't and we are okay with that as long as he is quiet.
